New Community-Based Participatory Research Initiative

Isabel Cuervo and Diego Palaguachi, from Make the Road New York, a collaborator of The Barry Commoner Center for Health and the Environment, have been accepted to the year-long Community-Based Participatory Research Partnership Academy (Academy) with a one-week intensive training at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, this July. The Academy is jointly hosted by the Detroit Community-Academic Urban Research Center (Detroit URC) and the University of Michigan School of Public Health, www.detroiturc.org. As Fellows, they will be learning how to advance and strengthen The Commoner Center's efforts to design and implement research programs with community-based organizations and their constituents.

Dr. Alfredo Morabia Named Editor-In-Chief of the American Journal of Public Health

Alfredo Morabia, MD, PhD, MPH, MHS, Professor of Epidemiology at the Commoner Center at Queens College, CUNY, will become the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Public Health (AJPH), the flagship journal of the American Public Health Association, on June 1, 2015. Dr. Morabia is a longtime contributor to the journal and formerly served as the Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Preventive Medicine. In his coming tenure, Dr. Morabia intends to engage with a younger generation of AJPH readers through a range of social media platforms and will work with the American Public Health Association towards the goal of making the United States the "healthiest nation in one generation."

Commoner Center Staff Pursue Graduate Study

Commoner Center staff are thriving and pursuing their interests in health and the environment. Jonathan Corbin MPH will continue his work at the Commoner Center while pursuing a Doctor of Public Health at the School of Public Health at the CUNY Graduate Center, with a focus on occupational health. Jessica Rossoff will begin studies to become a Doctor of Osteopathy at the New York Institute of Technology's College of Osteopathic Medicine. Zoey Laskaris MPH will study occupational epidemiology in pursuing her PhD at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Jennifer Imasuen will begin studying to become a Physician Assistant at City College's Sophie Davis Program. Katie McConnell will begin a Master's degree in environmental management at Yale's School of Forestry. Congratulations to all!
